Dry magnetic separators are devices that utilize magnetic differences to separate minerals without water, enabling the dry separation of magnetic and non-magnetic minerals. Their core component is a permanent or electromagnetic magnetic system. Under the influence of a magnetic field, magnetic particles adhere to the surface of the magnetic drum and are carried to the discharge zone by rotation, while non-magnetic particles fall naturally due to inertia, achieving efficient separation.
This compact, low-energy-consumption equipment is widely used for rough and fine separation of magnetic minerals like iron ore and manganese ore. It is particularly suitable for arid regions with water scarcity or scenarios demanding strict control over product moisture content. With simple operation and low maintenance costs, the dry magnetic separator serves as a key piece of equipment for efficient resource recovery and environmentally friendly production in mining, metallurgy, and related industries.
Magnetic Separator Function
Magnetic separators, particularly the drum type shown here, function to separate ferromagnetic materials (materials attracted to magnets) from non-ferromagnetic materials in a mixture. This is accomplished by strategically placing powerful permanent magnets or electromagnets within a rotating drum or above a conveying system. As material flows over or under the magnetic field, ferromagnetic particles are attracted to the magnetic source and adhere to the surface of the drum or belt. As the drum rotates or the belt is freed from the magnetic field, the magnetic particles are released and discharged, while the non-magnetic materials continue on their original trajectory due to gravity or momentum. Key functions include:
Ferromagnetic Material Removal: Efficiently extract iron, steel, nickel, cobalt and other magnetic materials from a variety of process streams.
Material Purification: Remove unwanted metal contaminants to improve the quality of the final product.
Resource Recovery: Separate valuable ferrous metals from waste streams for recycling.
Equipment Protection: Remove stray metals that can damage downstream processing equipment such as crushers, grinders and conveyors.
Magnetic Ore Concentration: Increase the concentration of valuable magnetic minerals in mined ore.
Magnetic Separator Application
Magnetic separators are widely used in numerous industries where separation of magnetic and non-magnetic materials is critical. Major application areas include:
Mining and mineral processing: Concentrate iron ore, remove magnetic contaminants from non-ferrous ores (such as copper, aluminum), and separate valuable magnetic minerals.
Recycling: Recover ferrous metals from municipal solid waste, electronic waste, and scrap metal for reuse.
Food processing: Remove stray metals (nuts, bolts, wire fragments) from food to ensure safety and prevent equipment damage.
Plastics industry: Remove iron contaminants from plastic regrind and virgin pellets.
Grain and feed processing: Remove metal contaminants from grain and animal feed.
Glass recycling: Remove iron contaminants from broken glass fragments.
Foundries and metal processing: Separate ferrous materials from sand, slag and other by-products.
Coal processing: Remove pyrite sulfur and tramp iron from coal.
Cement industry: Remove tramp iron from raw materials and clinker.
